![]() Today's PhotoAugust greetings! This is a view of the famous "knife edge" on Katahdin, looking ahead toward the northern terminus of the "regular" Appalachian Trail on Baxter Peak. The peak you see in the distance is actually South Peak on Katahdin -- Baxter is slightly beyond, just out of frame to the right. This isn't the route that the AT uses; it follows the old Hunt Trail to the summit and more or less approaches Baxter Peak from the opposite direction of the Knife Edge Trail. Climbers following the knife edge have the added task of climbing South Peak, as well as the outlying pinnacles of Chimney Peak and Pamola. It's truly a brutal day hike. If you've never been to New England, you might be surprised that such awesome terrain is found on the east coast! With the tarns and ponds, there are times that Katahdin can easily be mistaken for Glacier National Park. Well anyway, the temps are cooling down and we're looking at some fabulous hiking weather...click the photo to join us on the trail... -- Rick Bolger Psst...in case you're wondering why you're looking at the same photo you saw yesterday, well, we don't change it at the same time every day. Some days we don't change it at all, especially when we're hiking, camping, skiing, or slacking. But we change it most of the time. Except Sundays. And usually Saturdays. Holidays, of course, we don't change it then either. If, on the other hand, you're looking at the same photo but a new description, it means we did something wrong, or perhaps your computer is about to go HAL on you. Better turn it off and go take a hike. Please click here to go back to the top of the page. Please click here for the Slackpacker web site Want to contribute a photo for "hike of the day?"
